Heroes German Dub complaint, part 1 of 1000

March 31, 2008 · 4 Comments

One of the many things wrong with German Heroes:

Molly: “Sie sind viel besser als die anderen Ärzte. Es hat fast gar nicht weh getan.”
Translation: “You are much better than the other doctors. It almost didn’t hurt at all.”
Original: “You’re different from the other doctors. They’re much better at this.”

My outrage over this makes me realize just how fond I am of the detail “Mohinder is bad at giving shots”. It’s such a hilarious little flaw. Eerything he does always works out, he can find cur for rare diseases, he can examine blood and spinal fluid samples very quickly an competently. But it hurts. It’s no fun.

Mohinder with a needle. List of victims.
Sylar (reaction: flinching and screaming)
Molly (reaction: flinching and complaining)
The Haitian (reaction: not shown)
Niki (reaction: not shown, I think)
HRG (did not complain, was dead, but whined later)
Maya (did not complain, was dead)

Almost victim:
Monica (refused vehemently, what a wise girl)

Zane Taylor’s doorbell

March 29, 2008 · 4 Comments

Zane’s doorbell goes “ding dong”.

You know, when you press the doorbell button, it first goes “ding”, and then after you’ve let go, it goes “dong”? When I was little, it was hilarious to keep the finger pressed on the button for a few seconds longer than necessary or sensible, resulting in “ding… … … dong”. It was pretty childish and grew old (and annoying) very fast, of couse. I don’t do it anymore.

This is Sylar ringing Zane’s doorbell.
This is Mohinder ringing Zane’s doorbell.

As you can observe, Sylar’s ding dong is much longer than Mohinder’s! (I just really wanted to write that sentence.) ERGO, he kept his finger on the doorbell for a moment, maybe because his mind wandered off and he forgot he was in the middle of ringing a doorbell… Or because he’s completely immature.

Secret favourite character

March 26, 2008 · 4 Comments

According to the Wiki, his name is Oliver Dennison. I cannot say I remember it, but what I do remember is that this fellow was a lot of fun. One day, he will write an unauthorized biography of Nathan Petrelli.

In the meantime, he’ll just be a journalist. A capable journalist could write many amazing stories in Heroesland, but it would be especially great to have a tabloid reporter writing about all the little maniestations of powers that people have, and only those in the know would realize that they are more than made-up nonsense stories. Kind of like in MIB. But of course, this does not apply to good old Oliver. He is a serious journalist, and he would never write about Nathan’s ability to fly, he would only reveal Nathan’s mob ties, his affairs and iligimate children.

He has the greatest facial expressions. I very much like him.

Popularity

Sneaking a peek at TWoP’s Heroes forums is dull and usually frustrating.

You want to know why Elle’s storyline “worked” while Maya’s “didn’t work”?

Elle never had her own. Elle was part of Peter’s storyline, then part of the HRG/Mohinder drama: she was with the Company storylines, the most interesting stuff this season, and she was never actually required to carry her own storyline all by herself.

It’s always more fun to watch a character interact with other characters, especially a variety. All characters who, early in their storylines, were in an isolated position, especially when they were also faced with serious problems and therefore did not display an unusually comic or cheerful attitudes towards life (unlike Monica), were unpopular with fans. Mohinder, Matt, Niki, now Maya.

But if you introduced these characters differently, they wouldn’t be themselves anymore. Niki’s family situation might not always have been exciting to watch, but it is what makes this character. Mohinder’s isolation made a lot of sense when it was exactly this that gave birth to his dynamic with Sylar. And without her horrifying ability and without being traumatized by it, why would Maya ever even have to travel to the USA to find Mohinder? Without the crap she went through, what impact would her arrival in NYC make, emotionally?

Psych

March 26, 2008 · 3 Comments

I have started watching Psych (until 1×04 so far) which my sister commented with “so you’re finlly doing what you’re told, good”. It’s fun! I like it! Thank you!

In my head, I am making a cross-over with Dexter. Because it’s something that I just keep doing. I cannot control it. I kept doing it with Pushing Daisies because of the voice-over narration, too, and because it would be funny to have Ned set out to capture Dexter… no, wait, not funny at all… but amusing, potentially.

As for Psych, it does not have voice-over narration (Shawn talks enough as it is, right?), and is not nearly as stylish as either Pushing Daisies or Dexter. But it has the same “regular flashbacks to the main character’s childhood and his influential cop-daddy”. They both have a police-colleague-who’s-on-to-them. Well, had one, in Dex’s case. Maybe they could bond over this. Of course, Shawn would immediately figure out there is something wrong with Dexter…? Possibly? And then what?

Blade of the Immortal

March 25, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The Blade of the Immortal anime’s official website.

People on ANN whine, of course, because it does not look more like Berserk, and because they think it looks generic… like a “generic bishoujo series”. What the hell. It looks like Blade of the Immortal! Their own fault if they did not think it would look like Blade of the Immortal.

When did “fandom” come to mean: “group of people who hate everything”?

Sylar

March 24, 2008 · 4 Comments

Something I find – well, not really shockingly significant, but interesting nontheless, it Sylar’s behaviour around the twins and Derek in the very beginning of the second season.

When he hears that Maya and Alejandro are going to New York, he asks “Do you have family there?” This is before he knew Maya and Alejandro had abilities, before he knew they were wanted for murder or anything and before he realized he could and would have to manipulate them into helping him. It strikes me as… so genuinely friendly, maybe the most human thing he has ever said. Just conversation, maybe even honest curiosity in these people?

I still wonder whether Sylar is thinking of Chandra or of Mohinder when he says he knows Dr. Suresh, they are old friends, he can take them to him.

Somehow, I never found a clear answer to this, and we never saw the moment where Sylar explained to Maya that they were not actually going to see Chandra Suresh, but his son.
