Because I can’t let go of Heroes yet. Oh, it’s probably my New Year’s resolution to kick that unhealthy habit, but it’d be best if Heroes just went away and I could do the pick-and-choose that I am sadly used to, as a Highlander fan.
Where the “canon” is so inconsistent you cannot respect it all at once, so the movies and the series and whatever they made are merely suggestions, pieces of a puzzle that you take to build your own version in your head.
The problem with having the thing you love in your head means it gets harder for you to talk with other fans. Somehow, you have to negotate a common… fanon? And this might be how AU fanfiction is born. Only not, because they get written for shows that are still good and make sense.
Ah, Heroes. I have a lot of respect for the characters and the storylines, the themes and directions in Season 1 and 2. This is why I can’t respect Season 3. I want to use this opportunity to ramble about how things might have or could have or should have developed after Season 2, taking into account – not what the writers want want WANT for a storyline, but how the characters might actually react.

Guys! Guys!! I need your help!
So, ages ago, I made this icon:

Alicia and I decided that Mohinder and Maya hooking up would be kind of fun. We decided that on October 30 2007. I looked in the chatlogs. The main appeal to us was that they would be making fun of Sylar and generally bond over Sylar-related things.
But it occurs to me that the icon can be misunderstood, and that would bother me. So, advice!
I do not want the icon to be read as “Sylar disapproves of Maya/Mohinder, and so do I and so should you!”
I want it to be read as: “Maya and Mohinder are bonding and Sylar feels left out. This serves him right, haha. Let’s all point and laugh at him!”
My problem may be that I do not take Sylar as seriously as some people do. I don’t worship the ground he walks on. I don’t root for him. Now, I don’t want to dumb the icon down, and it is supposed to be textless, that’s the point. And I think it works, it just doesn’t work for… dumb and biased people. People who kid themselves into thinking they can relate to Sylar more than they can relate to Mo or Maya.

Zane’s doorbell goes “ding dong”.
You know, when you press the doorbell button, it first goes “ding”, and then after you’ve let go, it goes “dong”? When I was little, it was hilarious to keep the finger pressed on the button for a few seconds longer than necessary or sensible, resulting in “ding… … … dong”. It was pretty childish and grew old (and annoying) very fast, of couse. I don’t do it anymore.
This is Sylar ringing Zane’s doorbell.
This is Mohinder ringing Zane’s doorbell.
As you can observe, Sylar’s ding dong is much longer than Mohinder’s! (I just really wanted to write that sentence.) ERGO, he kept his finger on the doorbell for a moment, maybe because his mind wandered off and he forgot he was in the middle of ringing a doorbell… Or because he’s completely immature.

Something I find – well, not really shockingly significant, but interesting nontheless, it Sylar’s behaviour around the twins and Derek in the very beginning of the second season.
When he hears that Maya and Alejandro are going to New York, he asks “Do you have family there?” This is before he knew Maya and Alejandro had abilities, before he knew they were wanted for murder or anything and before he realized he could and would have to manipulate them into helping him. It strikes me as… so genuinely friendly, maybe the most human thing he has ever said. Just conversation, maybe even honest curiosity in these people?
I still wonder whether Sylar is thinking of Chandra or of Mohinder when he says he knows Dr. Suresh, they are old friends, he can take them to him.
Somehow, I never found a clear answer to this, and we never saw the moment where Sylar explained to Maya that they were not actually going to see Chandra Suresh, but his son.
